The Bundaberg Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Bundaberg Regional Council, has announced a powerful new addition to this year’s Business Excellence Awards: The Mayor’s Sonja Pressler-McHugh Women in Business Award.
Named in memory of the late Sonja Pressler-McHugh, CEO of McHugh Steel and an inspiring figure in the local business landscape, the award celebrates the entrepreneurial spirit and community-minded leadership that defined her life.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the new award was a tribute to a remarkable woman whose influence extended far beyond her own business.
“This new award, named in honour of Sonja, will be presented each year to a businesswoman who displays entrepreneurship, motivates, innovates, lifts up other women and gives back to the community,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“In collaboration with the Pressler-McHugh family, we have designed the award criteria to reflect Sonja’s leadership values.
“We’re thankful for the support of McHugh Steel who are coming onboard to provide a bursary to the award winner to take up professional training and development in the field of their choice. It’s a great way to give back and honour Sonja’s legacy.”
Chamber of Commerce President Tim Sayre welcomed the introduction of the award.
“The Chamber is proud to be partnering with Council to honour an amazing woman who had an incredible impact on our community,” he said.
“This new award ensures that not only will Sonja be remembered, but her legacy will assist and recognise others as they make their mark on our community.”
Sonja’s daughters, Demi and Emma Pressler-McHugh, said they were proud to see their mother’s legacy live on through the award.
“We are incredibly honoured that this award carries Mum’s name.
“She believed in lifting others up, especially women in business, and this award reflects everything she stood for – strength, generosity, resilience and vision.
“Seeing her legacy inspire others is the most powerful tribute we could imagine.”
