Feedback invited on innovative road safety system

In February 2025 Council installed a Rural Intersection Activated Warning System (RIAWS) using Australian Government funding to enhance road safety at the high-risk area.

Bundaberg Regional Council is encouraging residents and road users to have their say on a new road safety initiative at the intersection of Hummock Road and Windermere Road.

In February 2025 Council installed a Rural Intersection Activated Warning System (RIAWS) using Australian Government funding to enhance road safety at the high-risk area.

This $175,000 project is fully funded under the Australian Government’s Black Spots Program, which provides funding for low-cost, high-benefit improvements on the road network to address actual or potential crashes that lead to high severity outcomes (fatalities and hospitalisations).

The system is designed to alert drivers on Windermere Road when a vehicle is approaching from Hummock Road, prompting them to reduce speed and proceed with increased caution.

Roads and Infrastructure (urban) portfolio spokesperson Cr Larine Statham-Blair said the system was the first of its kind in Queensland and represented a smarter approach to reducing road risk in rural areas.

“This technology provides targeted, real-time warnings to drivers rather than relying on permanent speed limits that may not reflect changing conditions,” she said.

“By encouraging safer speeds only when necessary, the system is helping to reduce the potential for serious crashes.

“We’re proud to lead the way with this innovation but the real measure of success is how safe our community feels on the road – and that’s why your feedback is so important.”

Council is now inviting residents, road users and nearby property owners to share their experiences and observations since the system was introduced.

The feedback will help evaluate the system’s performance and guide future road safety initiatives.

  1. Given that the 60 limit sign is on more then it is off , and this is with no traffic in the side St Council could have just put in static 60 KM/H signs and used the $175,000 on another projects.

The speed limit when on doesn’t slow any traffic, as you could have a case where you have just passed the sign and then it comes on, but you don’t see it reduce limit as you have already passed the sign.

Also, If you have reduced your speed to 60Km/H the next 80Km/H sign is another 200 or 300 meters up road.

  2. Basically, the pet-time reduced speed limit doesn’t work and can’t be enforced without considerable Police resources. It would’ve been cheaper to install permanent 60 signs.

  3. Basically, the part-time reduced speed limit doesn’t work and can’t be enforced without considerable Police resources. It would’ve been cheaper to install permanent 60 signs.

  4. I like it makes it lot safer to get out of the humik and side road probably best to just make it full time 60 as it is on and of a lot

  5. Wow 175 K just for those lights!!! I agree wholeheartedly with Dave Mason money could have been spent elsewhere but more than likely be wasted anyway??? on other projects such as Hughes road roundabout 4.2 m, swimming pool 85m and entrance gate??? to Bargara sewerage plant!!! ,truckloads of sand to northern foreshore of Neilson beach which is eroding away now and maybe all gone in Jan/Feb on high tides

  6. I am not sure if it would work. But i would like to see a couple of the convex mirrors placed on back windermere rd and Elliott heads rd on that intersection that links along st johns rd. Coming from bundaberg. As you can’t see approaching them intersection coming from bundaberg and vice vesa on Elliot heads rd. Just a little more added security for peace of mind seeing as there seems to be a lot of people that obviously don’t pay attention when they are driving. Makes me nervous each time driving through them.

  7. I think a Roundabout at that Intersection would make very little difference, if anything it would hinder peak hour traffic from both Roads.
The New Road Sign seems to be working well.
So my answer would be a No to the Roundabout.

  8. Traffic lights at the intersection of Windermere Road & Burnett Heads Road would be good. Very long queues when folk going to work in the morning

  9. great idea, my husband and I had to pull a couple of elderly people from their cars a few years back, one later died. Council can’t help if people don’t follow signs. Like every road rule or sign some people think it does’nt apply to them.
