The annual Bundaberg Four Wheel Drive Club Camp Cooking Competition was held recently at the club’s camping grounds on the banks of Kolan River, about an hour North of Bundaberg.
What started as a camp oven cooking competition back in 2001 has evolved into any style of camp cooking.
Over the years meals have been cooked by various means.
Hay boxes, bell ovens, frying pans, caravan ovens, Webbers, Thermo cookers, smokers and the trusty camp oven have been used to serve some quality meals and some that would be best forgotten, but that’s camp cooking for you.

Rules for the competition were that the meal had to be prepared and cooked at the camp to be eligible to win.
Winter is the best time to run a cooking competition, and the fire was stoked up to prepare the coals.
Cooking skills were tested, for the sheer fun of trying out new recipes before the main event.
A choc chip damper cooked to perfection– still gooey on the inside, was a starter.
As the club is celebrating our 50th year, it was decided the theme of the cookoff would be the 70s.
Members bought out decorations with retro mini disco balls to put on the tables to add to the theme – very groovy!
Homemade Sausage Rolls cooked in a Webber as an entrée, red wine beef stew with dumplings on the campfire for main and peach cobbler in the campfire for dessert.
While the Peach Cobbler was cooking, out came the Fondue set.
Chocolate sauce in the fondue with fruit, marshmallows and Oreos and wafers to dip into the sauce.

The voting took place with the beef stew and the fondue taking honours.
Due to both dishes being cooked by the same family, the Lynch’s get their name on the perpetual trophy this year.
Camp cooking is always a great feed, and this year’s competition was once again a great success.
