Drivers can look forward to smoother, safer journeys as Bundaberg Regional Council launches a major road resurfacing program for the 2025/26 financial year.
In a significant step forward, Council is shifting gears to focus on larger-scale road renewal projects that will deliver long-term benefits across the region.
This includes the 2025/26 Asphalt Resurfacing Program, now open for tender, with works expected to begin in mid-October and completed by March 2026.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the initiative was about future-proofing the region’s road network.
“We’re investing in the roads our community relies on every day, whether it’s getting to work, school or the shops,” she said.
“This program is about delivering value for money, supporting our growing population and making sure our roads are safe, reliable and built to last.”
In order to determine what areas should be prioritised, Council undertook a comprehensive review of more than 500 roads across the region.
Each site was assessed for pavement condition, traffic volumes, safety risks and long-term sustainability.
The 2025/26 Asphalt Resurfacing Program includes 45 roads across 13 suburbs, covering approximately 11.4 kilometres or 107,707 square metres of pavement.
Mayor Blackburn said the works would make a noticeable difference for residents.
“This isn’t just about fixing potholes, it’s about improving the overall driving experience,” she said.
“We’re targeting the roads that need it most and using proven methods to extend their life, reduce maintenance costs and improve safety for everyone.”
The resurfacing process includes:
- Removal of worn asphalt
- Application of a protective seal
- Laying of new asphalt
- Fresh line marking where needed
This method is widely used across Australia for its cost-effectiveness and minimal disruption.
The benefits include:
- Longer-lasting roads – adds eight to 15+ years of service life
- Cost savings – reduces need for frequent repairs
- Improved safety – smoother surfaces and better traction
- Better appearance – fresh, dark finish ideal for high-visibility areas
- Quick completion – minimal disruption to traffic
- Preventative care -seals cracks and protects against weather damage
This initiative is partly funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program.
