Safety concerns spark change to cemetery access

The new gate schedule is intended to prevent unauthorised vehicle access while maintaining respectful and appropriate use of the site.

Bundaberg Regional Council will close the after-hours gate access at the Bundaberg General Cemetery in response to ongoing safety concerns.

From Wednesday 26 November the entry and exit point on Johnston Street will be secured each day at 4.30 pm and reopened at 7.30 am, aligning with the operating times of all other cemetery gates.

The change is being introduced after numerous complaints about unsafe and inappropriate vehicle use within the cemetery grounds.

The new gate schedule is intended to prevent unauthorised vehicle access while maintaining respectful and appropriate use of the site.

Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Gary kirk said the safety of visitors and the protection of cemetery grounds remained the highest priority.

“This decision has been made with careful consideration following the review of a number recent incidents,” he said.

“Unfortunately, ongoing unauthorised vehicle access has created safety risks for visitors and staff.

“Introducing the controlled gate times on Johnston Street will help to ensure the cemetery remains a peaceful, respectful and safe environment.”

Pedestrian access to the cemetery outside the 7.30 am to 4.30 pm gate hours will still be available via Hampson Street, Johnston Street and Bolewski Street entry points.

Residents seeking more information about the changes to afterhours vehicle entry can contact Council on 1300 883 699.

  1. Congratulations on the closing of gates to cemetery. I have 1 more issue, speed limits along Hampson street. As there are no paved paths along Hampson Street, pedestrians who walk along this street are in danger. Also lack of respect when a funeral is being held. It’s like a speedway
