Visitors to Hinkler Hall of Aviation can enjoy a more immersive experience with new interactive digital technology transforming the way pioneer aviator Bert Hinkler’s story is told.
Made possible by funding from the 2023 Building Bush Tourism grant through Queensland’s Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI), the project has delivered upgraded exhibits that enhance accessibility and engagement.
The new features further enhance the hall’s Globe Theatre, revitalise storytelling in the Mon Repos diorama and see a new “Make a Memory with Bert” display added to the experience.

Council’s tourism facilities portfolio spokesperson Cr Steve Cooper said the investment guaranteed Bundaberg’s tourism assets continued to inspire pride in the community and attract visitors from across the region.
“These enhancements ensure the Hinkler Hall of Aviation remains a must-see destination for visitors and locals,” Cr Cooper said.
“By combining history with interactive technology, we’re creating experiences that inspire pride in our community and encourage more people to discover Bundaberg.
“We are extremely grateful to DETSI for their funding support as this investment has allowed us to deliver a richer tourism experience.”

Cr Cooper said the upgrades highlighted Council’s commitment to celebrating Bert Hinkler’s legacy while ensuring every visitor could enjoy the experience.
“We’re very proud to unveil these enhancements which make the hall more interactive, inclusive and enjoyable,” Cr Cooper said.
“Each upgrade adds a new layer of storytelling to Bert’s phenomenal journey.”

The Globe Theatre has introduced closed captioning for hearing‑impaired visitors and a touchscreen start option, reducing wait times and ensuring everyone can enjoy the film from the very beginning with a clear countdown display.
The Mon Repos Diorama now features updated audio and visuals, allowing guests to hear the story from Bert, his mother Frances and the turtles, with spotlights and animated projections.
The new “Make a Memory with Bert” display offers a free photo opportunity in the foyer where visitors can capture a keepsake alongside a life‑size cutout of Bert Hinkler and his Avro Avian aircraft.
With all interactive exhibits now fully operational, the Hinkler Hall of Aviation offers a seamless journey through the life and achievements of Bundaberg’s aviation hero.
The Hinkler Hall of Aviation is open seven days a week from 9 am to 3 pm, with tickets available for purchase on arrival.
Over the Christmas period it will remain open every day except Christmas Day with public holiday hours from 10 am to 3 pm.
