A popular bakery on Bourbong Street is set to get a heritage-friendly façade refresh under a Bundaberg Regional Council initiative.
The owners of 175 Bourbong Street, currently home to Cruz the Bakehouse, successfully applied to Council’s Our Stories Our Places Heritage and Character grant program to repaint the building’s exterior in a traditional colour scheme.
Council approved a grant of $5,950 at its Ordinary meeting in December 2025, providing funding for half the cost of the repainting works.
The building is eligible for the grant as it is sited within the Bundaberg Commercial Character Precinct within the heritage and neighbourhood character overlay of Council’s planning scheme.
The front façade and underside of the awning will be painted in Colorbond Vivid White, helping to preserve its durability by providing additional weather protection.
The western side of the building, which faces into a laneway shared with the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre, and northern side, which is visible from Post Office Lane, are currently painted pink and will be painted Colorbond Grey Strap.
The building owners anticipate repainting works will be completed in the coming months.
Under the Our Stories Our Places heritage and character grant program, Council may contribute 50% (dollar-for-dollar) toward eligible conservation works up to a maximum contribution by Council of $10,000 per project.
Council revised the guidelines and eligibility for the program in 2025-26 financial year to include support for conservation works on residential local heritage places and improvements to signage and painting the exterior of commercial character buildings within the traditional main streets of Bundaberg and Childers.
Applications close on 31 May 2026 unless all funds are expended sooner.
