Ceramic artwork transcends functional clay form

Ariella Anderson Transcend artwork
Ariella Anderson, ‘Transcend’, 2005, Textured white raku clay cast to shape, fired to 1098 degrees Celsius, raku fired with copper glazes and post reduction, 64 x 19.5 x 25 cm.

In her expressive ceramic artwork ‘Transcend’, artist Ariella Anderson explores the medium of clay and its ability to induce emotions in an audience.

Ariella has worked with clay for more than 30 years and over this time has developed a body of work that steps away from the functional traditions of ceramics.

She specialises in Raku firing and hand-building techniques that embrace unpredictability and the transformation of materials through the process.

‘Transcend’, part of the Bundaberg Regional Council Collection, is one in a series of three works that embody Ariella’s approach – forms that invite a response from the viewer rather than serving a practical purpose.

The organic form curls up to create a one-of a kind shape that blurs the line between function and sculpture, with a fired copper glaze of shifting colours from the Raku firing process.

‘Transcend’ was displayed in Ariella’s solo exhibition ‘Journey’ at Childers Arts Space in 2005 and acquired for the Bundaberg Regional Council Collection.

Ariella’s evolving arts practice ranges from recent experimental work and unique wearable statement jewellery to site-specific large-scale murals.

She is a member of Malki Studio, a family business with three artists creating smaller scale objects and jewellery.

Ariella was the recipient of the Moreton Bay Sculpture Award in 2009 and has been featured in multiple publications including the international book series ‘500 Raku’.

She has exhibited in the United States, Israel and across Australia, where she lives and works in the Bundaberg Region.
