After an overwhelming response to help replenish local flood-damaged gardens, the Bundaberg Organic Growers have delivered seed donations from across south-east Queensland to Bundaberg Regional Libraries’ Seed Library.
Due to the volume of donations, the seeds will be available at the Seed Library facilities in the Bundaberg Childers and Gin Gin Libraries with both pollinating flower and vegetable varieties available.
Bundaberg Mayor Helen Blackburn said the donation was a wonderful way to show support for the community following the flood damage earlier this year.
“It’s a great initiative and good to see Queensland coming together to help our community right here,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“The Seed Library is here as a service to the community, not just here in the Bundaberg Library but also in our Gin Gin Library and Childers library, so people can come in and collect seeds and plant them away and see how they go.
“We welcome anybody to come in and pick up their seeds.”
Bundaberg Organic Gardeners Inc (BOGI) President Marlene Kent-Fuller said the scale of the donation was largely thanks to gardening guru Annette McFarlane who put out the call on her radio show.
“These seeds have been donated to the Bundaberg Region from all over Queensland, so they’ve come from school children, nursing homes, farmers and everyday people that listen to the ABC radio thanks to Annette McFarlane who put the word out about the floods,” Marlene said.
“It was amazing, it was a huge chain of events, all the letters and cards came which was heartfelt to see… people from all different walks of life caring about the Bundaberg Region, it was really inspiring.”
Marlene said BOGI was a proud participant in the Seed Library program making regular donations and that sharing that with the community was very important to the group.
“We’re in the best climate to have a go [at gardening], no matter what you choose the taste will be amazing,” she said.
“But if you’re having any trouble, come and see us at our club, everyone is welcome!”
The Seed Library program is available at Bundaberg, Childers and Gin Gin libraries and free for all library members.
