Bundaberg Regional Council advises that construction works will commence later this year to deliver safety improvements and infrastructure renewal in George Street and at the George Street/Targo Street intersection.
Stage 1 – George Street Culvert Renewal
Late September 2026 to December 2026 (weather permitting).
Works include:
- Renewal of the existing box culverts over Saltwater Creek.
- Road reinstatement.
- Construction of new footpath and fencing to provide compliant pedestrian and cyclist access.
Stage 2 – George Street/Targo Street Intersection Upgrade
Mid-January 2027 to late April 2027 (weather permitting).
Works include:
- Upgrades to the roundabout following recommendations from a Road Safety Audit.
- Improved intersection visibility through central island realignment and lower landscaping.
- Improved vehicle entry and exit paths.
- New off-road cycle facilities.
- New raised wombat crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.
Traffic and pedestrian management will be in place throughout construction.
Local access for residents, businesses and waste collection services will be maintained.
Businesses within the project area will remain open during the works.
All roads will reopen to traffic from early December 2026 to early January 2027 for the holiday period.
Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be installed before construction to notify motorists of changed traffic conditions.
A further project update will be provided once the contractor has been appointed and construction start dates have been confirmed.
