Public Notice – Moore Park Beach creek dredging and coastal management works

Bundaberg Regional Council will commence dredging at Moore Park Beach creek in October 2026 as part of Shoreline Erosion Management Plan (SEMP) works for the area.

Council has engaged a specialist coastal engineer to investigate long-term solutions for managing the interaction between the shoreline and the creek entrance.

Stage 1 – Creek entrance relocation and commencement of SEMP

The first stage of works will involve:

  • Temporarily relocating the creek entrance approximately 1km south, through an unvegetated section of the spit.
  • Closing the existing creek channel.
  • Allowing sand from the spit and creek delta to move naturally north towards Moore Park Beach.
  • Commencing the SEMP process.

The relocated creek entrance will return the creek to approximately its 2020 position following the natural movement and behaviour of the creek entrance.

The temporary relocation is estimated to provide two to three years of benefit, while the SEMP will provide a longer-term management framework for the area, with a planning horizon of 10 years or more.

Temporary fencing currently in place will be removed and temporary barrier mesh will be placed along the edge of the erosion bank to provide greater safety to the community and allow the remaining masterplan works to be planned and completed in line with the Stage 1 works.

Stage 2 – Detached breakwater

The second stage proposes construction of a detached breakwater near Bob Nielsen Park.

The breakwater is intended to locally retain more sand and widen the beach in this area, helping to offset the impacts of storm erosion events.

Stage 3 – Long-term SEMP implementation

The third stage will involve finalising and implementing the actions identified through the SEMP.

This work is expected to occur from March 2027 to August 2028, subject to the outcomes of the planning and assessment process.

Long-term approach

The staged works are designed to provide both immediate and longer-term management of Moore Park Beach creek and the surrounding shoreline.

Council will continue to assess coastal processes and use the findings of the SEMP to guide future management decisions and provide a sustainable approach to managing the creek entrance and shoreline over the longer term.
