A major thoroughfare in Innes Park will be closed for an extended period while Bundaberg Regional Council undertakes a significant upgrade designed to improve the road’s safety, strength and long-term reliability.
The section of Poinciana Drive between Back Windermere Road and Grevillea Avenue will be fully closed while the stage one works are carried out, with construction estimated to commence from Monday 21 September and continue through to June 2027.
Council is encouraging residents to plan ahead, allow additional time for travel and follow all temporary traffic controls and signage while works are underway.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the extended closure was necessary to allow the significant works to be undertaken safely and efficiently.
“We know a road closure of this length may be an inconvenience for people who live in and travel through the area but the scale of this project means we need to take this approach to deliver the work safely and effectively,” she said.
“This isn’t simply a road resurfacing project.
“We’re addressing the underlying pavement, widening the road, improving drainage and upgrading other infrastructure to give Poinciana Dr a much stronger foundation for the future.”
Why is Poinciana Drive being upgraded?
The existing road requires significant improvement to its pavement condition, road geometry and supporting infrastructure.
The upgrade will rehabilitate and widen the road to an ultimate width of 9.3 m.
The works will strengthen the pavement and improve drainage, lighting and other road infrastructure.
Roads and Infrastructure (urban) portfolio spokesperson Cr Larine Statham-Blair said the upgrade was about making sure Poinciana Dr was fit for future growth and improving drainage in Innes Park North.
“The population within our coastal areas is growing rapidly and with that comes the need to upgrade surrounding roads and infrastructure to support this growth,” she said.
“By undertaking these improvements together, rather than addressing individual issues separately, Council can deliver a much more comprehensive upgrade and provide better long-term value for the community.”
Bus routes to change
The closure will affect a number of existing bus routes operating through the area.
A temporary bus stop will be established on Kathleen Drive, approximately 50 m east of Orlabah Avenue.
Residents and bus users should look out for further information from Translink about changes to routes and timetables.
Bundaberg Regional Council will provide further project updates and stage-specific notifications as the Poinciana Drive upgrade progresses.
The project is funded by the Australian Government through the Roads to Recovery Program and the Queensland Government through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS).
