Three new exhibitions at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery celebrate the life and landscape of the Bundaberg Region as seen through the eyes of the region’s artists.
Opening on Friday 16 October with a free opening night event, the exhibitions showcase the diverse range of creative talent produced in the region.
Catching the Burnett
‘Catching the Burnett’ celebrates the life and work of Monto-born artist Hugh Gilmour (Gil) Jamieson, whose paintings vividly capture the landscapes, histories and stories of Central Queensland.
Featuring works created both during his time with the Australian Modernists in Melbourne and later from his studio near Monto, this exhibition explores Gil’s unique blend of social realism, romanticism and surreal storytelling.
Through depictions of land, sea and rural life, ‘Catching the Burnett’ offers a compelling insight into the people, places and cultural histories that shaped one of Queensland’s most distinctive artistic voices.
Raised in Cane
‘Raised in Cane’ by artist Kyle Schneider transforms The Vault into an immersive world of light, sound and reflection inspired by Bundaberg’s iconic sugarcane landscapes.
Featuring more than 4,000 individually programmed LED lights and original audio, this installation invites visitors to step inside a constantly shifting sensory experience.
Bringing together the artist’s passion for lighting and photography, ‘Raised in Cane’ explores the connection between place, memory and technology.
Harvest and Heritage
‘Harvest and Heritage’ by local Bundaberg artists Maggie Spenceley, Colleen Helmore and Carmel Birchley, celebrates the agriculture that has shaped the Bundaberg Region’s landscape, communities and identity.
Showcasing the people, industries and products that form the backbone of the region, this exhibition explores Bundaberg’s rich farming history, from its long-standing sugar cane industry to its reputation as Australia’s macadamia and tomato capital.
Through a diverse collection of artworks, ‘Harvest and Heritage’ reflects on the resilience, innovation and adaptability of local farming communities, while highlighting the importance of protecting productive agricultural land for future generations.
Opening event
Community is invited to attend the official opening of all three exhibitions.
