National Children’s Book Week turns 80 this year with plenty of page-turning reasons to celebrate across the Bundaberg Region.
Taking place from 16 to 23 August, young readers can enjoy puppet shows, special dress up story time sessions at local libraries and the annual Paint Gin Gin REaD celebration, all under this year’s theme of ‘Book an Adventure’.
Arts and Heritage portfolio spokesperson Cr John Learmonth said Paint Gin Gin REaD was always an event to bookmark.
“Every year local businesses in Gin Gin create special Book Week displays to create a little bit of magic for our young readers,” Cr Learmonth said.
“Everyone is invited to visit the displays throughout the week, especially on Wednesday 20 August where children can dress up as their favourite book character and join in the fun.
“Children aged up to 15 can also vote for their favourite display at the Gin Gin Library, with a perpetual trophy awarded to the winners to showcase until Book Week next year.
“Events like these are a great way to ‘Book an Adventure’ right here in our region and raise awareness about the importance of reading to children.”
Paint Gin Gin REaD is a community-wide initiative aimed at enhancing early literacy among children in the Gin Gin region, supported by the Gin Gin Early Years Network.
This Book Week event is made possible through the collaboration and support of Bundaberg Regional Libraries, the Queensland Government’s Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy, and Early Childhood Education and Care.
