Three floodway structures across the region will soon be upgraded with increased width and environmentally-conscious designs.
The Bundaberg Regional Council project, scheduled to commence in mid-September, will target floodways on Ferry Hills Road (Wallaville), South Littabella Road (Miara) and Mattons Road (Avondale).
Roads and Infrastructure (rural) portfolio spokesperson Cr Bill Trevor said the works were essential to maintaining a safe and reliable road network.
“These floodways are nearing the end of their design life and require replacement to ensure continued safety for road users, especially during our heavy rain periods,” he said.
“The upgrades will feature improvements to the road leading into and out of each site to make driving smoother and safer and will include widening to ensure two cars can pass safely.”
In addition to safety improvements, the new designs incorporate environmental features aimed at supporting aquatic life.
“Each site has been designed to promote the free passage of fish and other aquatic species,” Cr Trevor said.
“This ensures that while we’re improving infrastructure, we’re also protecting the natural ecosystems that rely on these waterways.”
The completion of the upgrades is expected by June 2026.
Council would like to thank residents for their patience during the construction period and encourage drivers to follow signage and directions at each site.
The upgrades to each floodway structure are being supported through the Australian Government’s Road to Recovery program.
