Upgrading the intersection of Three Chain and Dahls Roads has been discussed as one of the major infrastructure improvements in the next Council budget.

Bundaberg Regional Council’s 2026–27 Budget, to be adopted in June, proposes to fund the intersection’s safety works.

The planned upgrade, which has received Black Spot funding, would increase visibility, reduce traffic speeds, manage increased traffic volumes and address safety risks associated with the nearby cane railway crossing.

Council also plans to install new warning technology designed to better alert drivers as they approach the intersection.

Mayor Helen Blackburn said an upgrade to the area had always been a major focus for Council and a necessity to improve long-term safety at the intersection, which was recently the site of a tragic fatality.

“We acknowledge the recent tragic incident at the intersection and the impact it has had on the community – our thoughts are with those affected,” she said.

“This upgrade forms part of a capital budget that proposes to feature a more than $47 million investment across our road network, reflecting our commitment to prioritising core services and community safety.

“Councillors have discussed and considered priority projects identified for the upcoming financial year with the budget to be decided in June.

“As traffic volumes continue to grow across our region, it’s important we plan ahead and invest in practical improvements that help keep people safe on our roads.”

Mayor Blackburn said the proposed works would deliver important long-term safety improvements for all road users.

“These upgrades are focused on reducing risk and improving safety for local families, cane industry operators and everyone travelling through the area,” she said.

“Better signage, improved road treatments and new warning technology will give drivers more time to react and make safer decisions at this intersection.”

The planned upgrade, which has received Black Spot funding, would increase visibility, reduce traffic speeds, manage increased traffic volumes and address safety risks associated with the nearby cane railway crossing.

The Black Spot Safety Works will include:

•  Changing the intersection priority to favour Three Chain Road, reflecting actual traffic patterns.

•  Widening and sealing the Dahls Road northbound approach.

•  Installation of flashing signals at the cane railway crossing on Three Chain Road.

•  Installation of railway crossing signage on both Dahls Road approaches.

•  Installation of a light at the intersection to improve visibility.

•  Undertaking a speed limit review along Dahls Road and more.

The Black Spot Safety Works are funded through the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program.

Council’s special budget meeting for the proposed 2026 – 2027 budget will be held on Tuesday 2 June.
