Official opening: ANZAC Park memorial blessing

The revitalised riverside precinct, located along Quay Street in the CBD, now offers a thoughtfully designed space for reflection, remembrance and community gathering, honouring the region’s proud wartime history.

A ceremony which included the blessing of memorials has officially opened the revitalised ANZAC Park.

For decades it has been a significant location for the Bundaberg Region community to gather, commemorate, reflect and recognise its ANZAC history and the servicemen and women who have served with dedication and honour.

Minister for Local Government and Water and Minister for Fire, Disaster Recovery and Volunteers Ann Leahy and Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Helen Blackburn led the official opening alongside veterans, representatives from the Bundaberg RSL and invited guests.

Work continues on the amenity block and other features to finalise the project and the final budget figure cannot be confirmed until all works are complete.

The works were supported through the State Government’s Works for Queensland initiative.

Minister for Local Government and Water and Minister for Fire, Disaster Recovery and Volunteers Ann Leah said the project was vital to boosting the liveability within the community.

“Supporting councils to deliver vital infrastructure is at the heart of the Crisafulli Government’s commitment to Queenslanders,” Ms Leahy said.

“It’s why we made the Works for Queensland program a permanent funding program, backing councils to deliver for communities just like this.”

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said ANZAC Park was more than just a place, it was a symbol of our community’s enduring respect for those who served.

“This revitalisation ensures future generations have a space to reflect, remember and honour the sacrifices made for our country,” Mr Bennett said.

“It’s wonderful to see the collaboration between Council, the RSL and the State Government delivering a space that truly reflects the essence of our region.”

Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn said the redevelopment ensured the community could gather to commemorate and reflect.

“From the rolling hills of Gallipoli represented in design elements to the 1.5 m high ‘remember’ sign – every detail has been carefully crafted to honour our servicemen and women,” she said.

“Anzac Park is where we come together each ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day and now we have a space that reflects the deep respect and gratitude this community holds for our wartime history.

“It’s more than a park. It’s a living memorial.”
