Sections of Moore Park Beach will be closed from Monday as urgent erosion protection and public safety works get underway.
The works will involve heavy machinery and truck movements along parts of the foreshore and beach.
Recent high tides and strong winds have again caused major coastal erosion, removing previously placed sand and exposing sections of the foreshore, including the foundations of the former Surf Life Saving Club.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said Council was acting urgently to reduce risk ahead of another large tidal event expected in around two weeks.
“This work is about protecting people and preventing further damage,” she said.
“Moore Park Beach will look and operate differently while these essential works are underway.”

From Monday, intensive works will take place between the northern end of Bob Nielsen Park and the southern point of the partly demolished surf club building site.
While some movement through the area will still be possible, access will be managed and sections of the beach and foreshore will be closed to allow for the safe operation of heavy vehicles and machinery.
Sand will be transported from Lassig Street to the eroded foreshore area to build up temporary protection and nourishment ahead of expected king tides.
“The goal is to provide immediate protection in front of the exposed foundations so future wave action removes sand rather than causing further damage,” Mayor Blackburn said.

Safety measures in place
A range of safety controls will be in place while works are underway, including:
- Temporary bollards delineating the works area
- Designated pedestrian corridors at the top of the beach
- Spotters on site to guide pedestrians and vehicles
- All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) monitoring movements and assisting with traffic control
- Signage directing pedestrians to use footpaths where required
Upcoming works and timeline
After preventative measures have been completed, Council will continue work in the area including the removal of the remaining slab and footings of the former surf club building, which will take place from 16 February.
Planning will also continue on longer-term coastal protection solutions, including potential breakwater construction and future sand nourishment.
All activities will be managed with turtle protection measures and environmental controls in place.
Council is asking residents and visitors to be aware of changing conditions, take extra care if visiting Moore Park Beach and follow on-site instructions while these works are carried out.
