Upgraded infrastructure and exhibits at tourism venues including Bundaberg Recreational Precinct, Bundaberg Multiplex Sport and Convention Centre and Hinkler Hall of Aviation will be delivered in Bundaberg Regional Council’s 2025-26 budget.

Improvements at Bundaberg Recreational Precinct and Hinkler Hall of Aviation will both be assisted through the Queensland Government’s Building Bush Tourism funding program to upgrade amenities and visitor experiences at the popular venues.

Council’s Tourism, Airport and Information Technology Services portfolio spokesperson Cr Steve Cooper said two upgrade projects at Bundaberg Recreational Precinct would create a more inviting events space.

“Council has been granted $198,957 through Building Bush Tourism to improve the precinct’s amenities through the installation of shade shelters, water fountains and waste and recycling bin enclosures,” Cr Cooper said.

“Additionally, Council will be replacing the aged internal light poles throughout the precinct with a sustainable and cost-effective alternative.

“The installation of modern lighting infrastructure, to cost $150,000 over three years, will improve the safety and functionality of the precinct for all users.

“These upgrades, to what is our region’s major events precinct, will be enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors every year.”

This financial year, Hinkler Hall of Aviation will complete a two-year project to upgrade its interactive exhibits through a $199,920 Building Bush Tourism grant received in 2024.

Cr Cooper said the third phase of the upgrade project would provide a significant improvement in the visitor experience.

“A review of the interactive displays identified that several were at risk of no longer functioning due to aging infrastructure and technology.

“The project will see upgrades to multiple exhibits within the Hinkler Hall of Aviation, including the Globe Theatre, Mon Repos Diorama, Glide like Bert and the Strip Map.

“As we progress with design and development of the upgrades, visitors will enjoy an enhanced interactive experience.”

Visitor experience at the Bundaberg Multiplex Sport and Convention Centre will also be enriched through the design and installation of acoustic treatment to the ceiling in the foyer.

“In the 2025-26 budget, Council is addressing the number one improvement request we receive from Multiplex users, which is the quality of the foyer acoustics.

“The Multiplex hosts hundreds of corporate and community events each year and the foyer is a popular networking and break-out space.

“By investing in this upgrade, Council acknowledges that improving the foyer’s useability during events is important to the overall enjoyment of the space.”
