Healthy and budget-friendly meals are on the menu in Childers and Gin Gin thanks to the Forgotten Foods to Fabulous Feasts program.
Supported with funding from Neighbourhood Centres Queensland, the Forgotten Foods to Fabulous Feasts program sees the Childers and Gin Gin Neighbourhood Centres offering a range of support to families looking to explore healthy eating options on a budget.
The program will include access to donated food from local farms and businesses, community classes demonstrating how to cook with the donated ingredients, healthy eating budget tips and recipes and free community barbecues.
Healthy and affordable options
Bundaberg Regional Council Community Resilience and Connection portfolio spokesperson Councillor Tracey McPhee said the program aimed to educate rather than create dependency.
“The exciting thing about the Forgotten Foods to Fabulous Feasts program is that it will empower families and individuals by giving them the practical skills to cook healthy meals and shop to a budget,” Cr McPhee said.
“By making use of the donated produce from local farms and businesses, residents will learn how to cook with the kinds of local ingredients easily available to them and learn how to turn things that may have just been sitting in their fridges or pantries into healthy and easy meals.
“The aim of this program is to give participants both healthy and affordable food options while also creating moments where they can gather and enjoy meals together as a community.”
