New development to help ease housing pressures

The development, approved at Council’s Ordinary Meeting, will deliver 386 houses and a wide range of shared facilities designed to support active, social living for its residents.

More than 380 homes will soon be built in Kalkie after Bundaberg Regional Council recently gave the green light to a new over-50s lifestyle community on Telegraph Road.

The development, approved at Council’s Ordinary Meeting, will deliver 386 houses and a wide range of shared facilities designed to support active, social living for its residents.

The announcement comes after the Queensland Government’s recent commitment to install traffic lights at the Telegraph Road and Ring Road intersection, aimed at improving safety and traffic flow in the area.

Mayor Helen Blackburn welcomed the development approval decision and said the project was another important step towards addressing the region’s growing need for housing.

“This development provides a significant opportunity to ease that pressure,” she said.

“Not only does this give older residents a quality living option but it also helps free up existing homes in the wider market for families and first-home buyers.

“This is about smart planning and providing more choices which is what is needed at a time when housing availability is one of our biggest challenges.”

The development will feature a range of modern, single-storey homes with two or three bedrooms, most with double garages and some featuring room for RVs.

There will also be on-site parking for visitors.

In addition to the homes, residents will have access to a range of shared facilities including a bowling green, tennis and pickleball courts, outdoor and indoor pools, gym, cinema, library, café, bar and lounge, men’s shed and caravan storage.

The development site is located over two parcels of land at 150 and 208 Telegraph Road in Kalkie.

A secondary component of the development approval being granted by Council is of a commercial and residential precinct to provide future commercial, residential and community facilities to service the needs of a growing Kalkie-Ashfield local area.

Before Council granted approval, the proposal was publicly advertised, giving the community an opportunity to provide feedback.

During this time Council received 63 submissions in relation to the development with most raising concerns about potential noise, supporting infrastructure, the type of housing and its impact on the local area.

All community submissions, along with Council’s responses, are available to view in the Planning Report here.

  1. What a great idea. Let’s hope that council fixes the water supply issues to the existing East Bundaberg suburbs with pressure declining noticeably before adding all these new estates and expecting the old infrastructure to cope
