Mayor Helen Blackburn said the gathering was a heartfelt opportunity to acknowledge the remarkable efforts of each recipient.

“It was a such a privilege to share morning tea with Bundaberg’s newest OAM recipients,” Mayor Blackburn said.

“These individuals represent the very best of our region – generous, committed and passionate about making a difference in their community.”

Five years ago he was part of the implementation of an emergency services cadet group.

“We grow these youngsters to eventually take over from us,” he said.

“Hopefully they keep going even long after I am gone.

“The community has been really good to me so why not give something back.”

In the 2025 Australia Day Honours Mrs Waldron was awarded for her service to veterans.

A retired Warrant Officer Class One, Mrs Waldron served in peace operations in Somalia and Bougainville and continues to advocate for women veterans through Bundaberg District Women Veterans Inc.

“I love supporting veterans and raising the profile of women veterans, particularly,” she said.

“It is nice to be acknowledged officially for the work I have done over the past ten years.”

In recognition of his service to the community through emergency response organisations Mr Ker was awarded in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours.

Mr Ker has been involved with Volunteer Marine Rescue Bundaberg since 1998 and has participated in hundreds of rescue activations and mentored countless volunteers.

“It keeps me out of mischief!” he joked.

“My background is navy and sailing and things like that.

“It’s a bit of a surprise [this award], because you are just doing what you are doing… it’s a bit humbling.”

Mr Ian Rieck OAM

Mrs Diane Rieck was in attendance on behalf of her late husband, who was posthumously recognised in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours for his service to veterans and their families.

Mr Rieck was the former president of the Vietnam Veterans’ Association Bundaberg, a former scout leader, aerial ambulance officer and more.

“He was in scouting when our sons were involved, he was a JP, he was an ambulance officer and then in the aerial ambulance, which he loved,” she said.

“He also helped many veterans.

“I am very proud of all of the things he has done over the years and my sons think it is a great that he is receiving this OAM.”
