Sirens of the Surf – Woolies, Maryborough Mystics team (1960), part of the Robert Farthing collection in Picture Bundaberg, BRN 207840.
Siren of the Surf was a competition where groups of women would march in the same style as the lifesavers in teams along the beach.
The first competition was held in 1944 after which it became the main event of the Railway Picnics from 1946 to 1972.
Originally for Railway employees and their families, these picnics were gradually opened to the general public.
This selection of images shows Siren of the Surf competitions held in Bargara and Woodgate with more available to view at Picture Bundaberg.
