Young visitors, and the young at heart, can make their mark as part of a special interactive installation at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery these school holidays.
Traceology, on now in the gallery’s ImaginArts space, was developed in response to contemporary First Nations artist Dylan Sarra’s exhibition, ‘_land’, in the adjoining gallery.
Burnett River Petroglyph was a large area of carvings covering 3.345 km sq in surface area that told First Nations stories of the Bundaberg Region.
In 1971, the site was removed to make way for a dam wall and 92 large sandstone rocks with the carvings were sent to destinations across Queensland.
A Gooreng Gooreng man from the Bundaberg Region, Dylan has referenced the petroglygh throughout his career as an artist as well as undertaking research to discover where the stones were sent.
The artworks in Traceology help to share the story of the site with younger audiences.
Traceology is on at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery until 8 November with free entry during gallery opening hours.
Dylan will present a free artist talk about his exhibition ‘_land’ on Wednesday 29 October from 5.30 to 7 pm. Bookings required.
Dylan Sarra is represented by Mitchell Fine Art Gallery.
