Two ways to recognise region’s best

Bundaberg Regional Council’s 2026 Australia Day Awards have introduced two new categories

There are new ways to recognise the actions, talents and dedication of individuals and groups before nominations close on 28 November with extra categories for the 2026 Australia Day Awards.

The Bundaberg Regional Council awards will be presented in January with six categories including two new additions:

  • Sportsperson of the Year Award – recognising outstanding achievement, dedication or contribution to sport within the local community.
  • Creative Citizen of the Year Award – recognising significant contribution to the arts and cultural life of the Bundaberg Region.

Mayor Helen Blackburn said the expanded awards program reflected the diverse ways people enriched the region.

“Sport and creativity are both at the heart of Bundaberg’s identity,” she said.

“From the athletes who inspire us with their dedication to the artists and creatives who enrich our cultural life, these new categories give us the chance to recognise the people who make our region a better place.”

Mayor Blackburn said being nominated brought real impact to the people receiving the recognition.

“Past nominees have told us that simply receiving the news – even if they don’t take home the win – builds pride, encourages service and highlights the values that make our region thrive.

“I encourage everyone to take a moment to nominate someone deserving as a simple way to say thank you.”
