Nominations are now open for Bundaberg Regional Council’s 2026 Australia Day Awards, offering a chance to honour those whose actions, talents and dedication make our region thrive.

Two new categories – Creative Citizen of the Year and Sportsperson of the Year – have been introduced to celebrate Bundaberg’s rich cultural and sporting talent.

Whether through leadership, creativity, sport or service, nominees represent the best of what it means to be part of a connected and caring community.

Mayor Helen Blackburn said the awards were a powerful way to acknowledge the contributions that often go unseen.

“These awards are about celebrating the people who lift others up, who give their time, energy and passion to make Bundaberg a better place,” she said.

“It’s a chance for us all to say thank you and to shine a light on those who truly deserve it.”

The awards will be held in January 2026 with six categories open for nominations:

Citizen of the Year Award

This award recognises an inspirational role model who displays ongoing excellence while demonstrating leadership and involvement in outcomes that contribute to the furthering of the Bundaberg Region.

Young Citizen of the Year Award

Open to nominees 25 years or younger on January 26, 2025, this award recognises outstanding achievement by a young resident who displays ongoing excellence while demonstrating leadership and involvement in outcomes that contribute to the furthering of the Bundaberg Region.

Senior Citizen of the Year Award

Recognising the vital role of seniors aged 65 years or older, this award honours those who continue to contribute to the community through their involvement, commitment, and knowledge sharing.

Sportsperson of the Year Award

This award recognises outstanding achievement, dedication or contribution to sport within the local community.

Creative Citizen of the Year Award

This award recognises significant contribution to the arts and cultural life of the local community.

Community Group of the Year Award

This award recognises significant contributions that community groups or other non-profit organisations within the community have made to the welfare of people, the quality of life, the arts, science, engineering, the environment, or other fields of endeavour.

Nominated initiatives must have been held in the Bundaberg Region during the preceding 12 months (November to November).

Mayor Blackburn urged residents to take the opportunity to recognise deserving candidates.

“We all know someone or a group who has made a difference in our lives and in the community,” she said.

“Now is the time to shine a light on their achievements by nominating them for an Australia Day Award.”

Nominations can now be submitted online up until 28 November 2025.
