Airport works to support safe operations

The Bundaberg Regional Council project involves a surface treatment known as Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) rejuvenation, which helps keep airport pavements safe and in good condition.

The Bundaberg Airport is set for a refresh with planned maintenance works on its runways and taxiways to take place in late February.

The Bundaberg Regional Council project involves a surface treatment known as Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB) rejuvenation, which helps keep airport pavements safe and in good condition.

Roads and Infrastructure (Urban) portfolio spokesperson Cr Larine Statham-Blair said the works were part of routine maintenance needed to keep the airport operating safely.

“Over time, runways and taxiways can become worn due to heavy aircraft movements, jet blast and exposure to the weather, which can lead to cracking and surface damage,” she said.

“It’s important we carry out this type of maintenance before small issues turn into bigger problems.

“This treatment helps seal early cracks, improves grip for aircraft and extends the life of the pavement.”

Cr Statham-Blair said the works were being timed and staged to minimise disruption.

“There will be some overnight runway closures but they’ll be limited to weekends to reduce impacts on regular services,” she said.

“Other areas of the airport, like taxiways and light aircraft spaces, will be closed in stages so the airport can continue operating.”

Funding for the project is supported by a Commonwealth Government grant under the Regional Airports Program Round 4.

Works are expected to finish by late-March, weather permitting.
