Bundaberg’s Harry Sunn, who has long been a respected cultural ambassador, will once again play a special role in the region’s Lunar New Year celebrations, continuing a much‑loved tradition.
Each year Harry, now in his early nineties, donates boxes of Chinese fortune cookies to share a meaningful piece of tradition with local families.
“To celebrate in China we used to get fortune cookies so I’ve been donating them since the very beginning,” Harry said.
“Three boxes this year with 300 in one box so it should be plenty.
“The kids all really enjoy it.”
When Council first introduced Chinese New Year celebrations to the region in 2006, Harry shared his knowledge of traditional lion and dragon dancing.
He went on to support the PCYC Dragon and Lion dancers for many years, including playing the drum that leads the performance.
“I’m getting too old now so I don’t join the team anymore but when they come, I still celebrate.”
This ongoing involvement follows a lifetime of cultural contribution in Bundaberg.
Harry and his wife Jenny opened the region’s first Chinese restaurant, the Wah Du, in 1962 – a milestone that helped introduce Chinese cuisine and traditions to local families.
The couple retired in 2003 after more than 40 years in business and Harry said he was then asked to share his culture and history with the community again.
This year Harry’s generosity continues as he helps to welcome the community to the Year of the Fire Horse.
“The Year of the Horse means strong,” Harry said.
“You can learn about it from the Nanning delegate at Lunar New Year.”
The sights, sounds and flavours of Lunar New Year will fill the Bundaberg Multiplex on Saturday 28 February from 2 – 5 pm.
The family‑friendly event will showcase an afternoon of traditional performances, hands‑on cultural activities and authentic Asian and Filipino street food.
