Creek a focus in long-term erosion investigation

Recent reports show the creek mouth has migrated approximately two kilometres north since 2012, creating several intermediate discharge points along the coastline.

Plans to address ongoing shoreline erosion at Moore Park Beach are progressing as Bundaberg Regional Council continues investigations into long-term solutions to protect the coastal area.

The area has experienced significant erosion for many years, with impacts recently intensified by heavy rainfall and tidal events.

Recent reports show the creek mouth has migrated approximately two kilometres north since 2012, creating several intermediate discharge points along the coastline.

Since 1965 the creek entrance has shifted an estimated 23 times.

These shifts are part of a natural process but can have significant impacts on nearby infrastructure and erosion patterns.

Mayor Helen Blackburn said Council had re-engaged a specialist coastal engineer to examine long-term solutions for managing the interaction between the shoreline and the creek outlet.

“We want to investigate whether a Shoreline Erosion Management Plan could include options to mitigate impacts at the creek mouth near Lassig St, reducing pressure on the current built environment,” she said.

“There is still a significant amount of scientific and environmental assessment required but we are committed to thoroughly investigating all viable options to support the long-term resilience of the area.”

Mayor Blackburn said the work was focused on balancing natural coastal processes with community protection.

“Recent weather has once again highlighted how dynamic this coastline is and why careful, long-term planning is so important,” she said.

“Council will continue to keep the community informed as investigations progress.”

  1. We live beach front in MPB, have done for over 20 years. We have seen creek movements over this time, however, this interference by council has put the shoreline into damage control. This should be your highest priority to have it rectified for residents, holiday makers and before turtle season.
