Baylando Latin Fusion will bring its Roots & Resonance project to a close with a special transformational dance workshop, offering Bundaberg locals an opportunity to move, connect and express themselves without the pressure of getting the ‘right’ steps.
Led by well-known Sunshine Coast dancer and transformational dance creator Jackson James Kubian, the workshop explores dance as a form of freedom and self-expression rather than a particular dance style.
Baylando Latin Fusion owner Hannah Reed said transformational dance invites participants to discover their own way of moving.
“There is no choreography, no prescribed steps and no right or wrong way to dance,” Hannah said.
“Instead, participants are guided through movement and connection exercises designed to encourage creativity, confidence and personal expression.
“The workshop is suitable for anyone and is designed to be welcoming and family friendly, whether participants are experienced dancers or have never danced before.”
The workshop is the final event for Hannah’s Roots & Resonance project which was supported by a Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grant from Bundaberg Regional Council.
Hannah said the program allowed her to bring some of Australia’s top artists to Bundaberg.
“Having the support has enabled me to be able to provide more for the community,” Hannah said.
“People who would not usually have access to the inclusivity and vibrancy of Latin dance and dance communities in general have been able to experience the many benefits that it can have.
“Ordinarily these types of things would only happen in major cities so to know that people here have enjoyed a cultural experience and made new friends is extremely fulfilling.”
Hannah said the connections she had made through the program have opened doors for her to dance and participate in programs in Byron Bay, Sunshine Coast and Adelaide during the year, as well as internationally.
“Earlier this year I went to Brazil, Salvador and Rio after connecting with Gianne, an artist that came to Bundaberg as part of our program,” she said.
“We had two other dancers and one drummer join us in Rio to parade in Carnaval.
“The ripples are endless!”
Hannah said there would be some changes coming for Baylando Latin Fusion, with closure of the studio location in Targo Street.
“Baylando is far from over!” she said.
“Running a studio offering something largely unknown in a regional area has been very challenging and I am in need of a break to be more present with my family and achieve some personal goals.
“Our weekly socials on Wednesday nights will continue at Blackflag and our monthly socials on the boardwalk are popular and will continue as well.
“This will be Baylando’s final day at 87 Targo Street so let’s raise the roof and find where we belong with dance.”
