Mighty Mitts Boxing provides a free mentoring and non-contact boxing youth program, catering to children aged 7 to 11 years old.
To celebrate the start of Term 3, founder Hami Shelford is inviting the community to join Mighty Mitts Boxing at the PCYC Bundaberg for their open day on Wednesday 23 July from 4.15 to 5 pm.

What inspired you to choose the Bundaberg Region as the location to set up this program?
Through my work with children and families I’ve seen many young kids in Bundaberg face challenges, especially around confidence and positive role models.
While co-facilitating a youth boxing program for teens, I noticed the under-11s were missing out on valuable support.
That inspired me to start Mighty Mitts Boxing – a free, positive program just for them.
Bundaberg has great potential and by investing in our kids early, we can help build confident, connected young people.
Can you provide an overview Mighty Mitts Boxing and the services you are offering?
Mighty Mitts Boxing is a free, non-contact boxing and mentoring program for kids aged 7 to 11.
It builds confidence, discipline, and resilience through fun drills and positive guidance in a safe, supportive space.
Held weekly at PCYC Bundaberg during Term 3, sessions combine age-appropriate fitness with group discussions on values like respect, self regulation, resilience, teamwork and goal-setting.
This free independent, community-driven program aims to give kids early support to grow strong and confident.
How do you envision this program benefitting the community?
By reaching kids early — before issues take hold.
It offers a free, positive space where children aged 7 to 11 can build confidence, self-control, and a sense of belonging.
For families doing it tough, it provides much-needed support and connection.
Long-term, it’s about creating healthier routines, stronger relationships, and a more resilient community — by investing in our kids when it matters most.
How can the community get involved?
The community can support Mighty Mitts Boxing by spreading the word, attending events, volunteering, or providing sponsorships and donations.
As a grassroots, community-driven program, we rely on local support to cover boxing gear, hall hire, activity costs, and fundraising for an enclosed trailer to transport and store equipment.
Every contribution, big or small—including donations through our GoFundMe—helps keep the program free and accessible for kids aged 7 to 11.
Together, we can build a stronger, safer future for our youth.
Are there any local businesses or organisations partnering with you for this event?
Yes, Matt and Tammy A’Bell from Let Hope Arise have kindly agreed to provide the free sausage sizzle for our open day.
For the duration of the school term, Mighty Mitts Boxing will be fully funding the community program.
While we don’t have formal partnerships yet, we’ve received strong encouragement and growing interest from Education Queensland, support agencies, local businesses and individuals.
We’re open to partnering with local philanthropists, businesses, schools, and donating organisations who share our vision and we look forward to expanding these connections as the program grows.

What is your vision for the program’s future?
My vision for Mighty Mitts Boxing is to grow into an established Youth Hub Centre in central Bundaberg – a safe, positive space where young people engage in non-contact boxing, receive mentoring, life skills development and support for personal growth.
A key part of this vision is supporting dedicated participants to earn their Boxing Australia Bronze Level Coaching qualification, creating career pathways in youth work and empowering them to give back as mentors and role models.
How do you hope attendees will feel after participating?
I hope every child in Mighty Mitts Boxing feels stronger, more confident and proud.
I want them to know they belong and are supported to be their best.
Whether learning new skills, making friends, or getting encouragement, I want them to leave feeling valued and motivated.
For families, I want them to feel relief knowing their child is in a safe, positive space focused on growth and respect.
Ultimately, I want every young person to feel they matter and have a bright future ahead.
Is there anything else you would like to share with the community?
A big thank you to everyone who has supported Mighty Mitts Boxing – through encouragement, sharing, or believing in the vision.
This program was born from a real community need, and it’s for the kids and families who need support and connection.
It’s not about competition, but about building confidence and opportunities for a better future.
I believe investing in our kids creates a stronger, safer community, and I’m committed to making that happen—one child at a time.
