Street lighting, crossings and traffic lights with detection technology will increase pedestrian safety at two busy Bundaberg intersections.
Work is underway at the Electra and Maryborough Streets intersection and the George and Maryborough Streets intersection to renew traffic signals.
The new traffic lights will include the introduction of modern technology to improve detection and protection for both pedestrians and vehicles.
The projects aim to provide safer, shorter, wider and less confusing pedestrian crossings at both intersections.
Tactile paving at crossing ramps will assist people with vision impairments.
Bundaberg Regional Council Roads and Infrastructure (Urban) portfolio spokesperson Cr Larine Statham-Blair said the upgrades would deliver important safety and accessibility benefits for the community.
“Located next to Hinkler Shopping Centre and other popular commercial spots, these busy intersections are utilised by lots of pedestrian and vehicles,” she said.
“We’re making the area safer for everyone – whether they’re walking, cycling or driving.”
There will be changed traffic conditions during construction and traffic controllers will be on site to guide pedestrians safely around the work zone.
The upgrade is fully funded through the Federal Government’s Black Spots Program, which targets dangerous roads and intersections where crashes are occurring or are at risk of occurring.
“We appreciate the community’s patience while construction is underway and look forward to delivering a safer, more accessible intersection for residents and visitors alike,” Cr Statham-Blair said.
