Connection and culture were celebrated both on and off the court at a recent community basketball tournament that brought together 300 participants from seven countries.
Hosted by Bundaberg Regional Council, in partnership with the Bundaberg Neighbourhood Centre, Bundaberg Basketball and the Bundaberg and District Australian Filipino Association Inc, the event was delivered as part of the Connecting and Building Thriving Multicultural Communities project.
The tournament featured six teams made up of players from Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Nepal, France, Australia, India and Indonesia, showcasing the diversity that makes the region so unique.
Community, Resilience and Connection portfolio spokesperson Cr Tracey McPhee said through sport, food and shared experiences, the day highlighted the rich mix of cultures in our region while strengthening meaningful community connections.
“There were games and activities available alongside delicious food from Everything Filipino,” she said.
“Attendees also took part in an interactive cultural experience with Taribelang Aboriginal Corporation, learning about First Nations symbolism and creating a clay version of a Coolamon – a traditional vessel made from wood or bark and used for carrying food and babies.”
Cr McPhee said the event highlighted the power of bringing people together in warm, welcoming spaces.
“Events like this remind us that connection can happen through play, food, learning and simply spending time together,” she said.
“When people from different backgrounds spend time together, it strengthens our whole community, as it builds understanding, respect and connection between people.

The Connecting and Building Thriving Multicultural Communities project will continue with an upcoming volleyball tournament, delivered in partnership with the Bundaberg Indian Malayalee Association and the Bundaberg Neighbourhood Centre.
Open to everyone, the event invites people to form a team with friends, enjoy Indian cuisine, experience cultural performances and take part in interactive art activities.
“This project is about creating opportunities for people to meet, share and feel a sense of belonging,” Cr McPhee said.
