Bundaberg Regional Council’s Gin Gin Neighbourhood Centre has secured a $3,000 funding boost to support this year’s Solomon Islands Independence Day celebration.
The funding, provided through Foodbank’s Feeding Queensland Kids grant program, will help enhance the annual celebration, which brings the community together through culture, food and connection.
Held each year, Solomon Islands Independence Day features traditional cooking, dancing, singing and prayer.
A highlight of the day is the traditional umu cooking method, where a large pit is dug in the ground to prepare meats and other dishes using heated stones.
Community, Resilience and Connection portfolio spokesperson Cr Tracey McPhee said the funding would help the event continue to grow and bring people together.
“This funding boost will help ensure this much-loved event continues to thrive and provide an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate,” she said.
“It’s a wonderful example of how cultural events strengthen community connections and showcase the diversity of our region.
“The Gin Gin Neighbourhood Centre plays an important role in creating inclusive opportunities for people to share culture, food and traditions.”
This year’s event will be held on 7 July at the Gin Gin Showgrounds, 4 Dear Street.
