
Native coastal vegetation has been planted along Bargara Beach as part of Bundaberg Regional Council’s sand nourishment project, helping to restore the dune system and improve long-term coastal resilience.
Invasive lantana growing throughout the dunes has been removed and replaced with native ground covers and coastal shrubs better suited to the local environment.
The new plantings will help stabilise the dunes by trapping windblown sand, reducing erosion and supporting the natural function of the coastal landscape.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the revegetation works were an important part of the sand nourishment project and would help ensure the coastline remained healthy and resilient into the future.
“Restoring our dune vegetation is just as important as replenishing the sand on our beaches,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“Removing invasive weeds like lantana and replacing them with native coastal species will improve the health of the dune system and provide greater protection against erosion over the long term.
“Healthy dunes are our first line of defence against coastal processes and these works will help the vegetation naturally capture and retain sand while enhancing the environmental values of the area.”
To give the new plants the best opportunity to establish, sections of the revegetated dunes have been temporarily fenced.
The community is encouraged to respect the temporary fencing and avoid entering these areas while the plants become established.
The revegetation works have been carried out alongside Council’s sand nourishment project, which is helping replenish sand along Bargara Beach to improve shoreline resilience following ongoing coastal erosion.
Council thanks residents and visitors for their cooperation as these important coastal protection works continue.
The project is supported by the Queensland government’s QCoast 2100 program Round 4, which is delivered in partnership with the Local Government Association of Queensland and is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
