A project designed to transform the way the region swims, moves and connects has been recognised as one of the region’s best, with the Bundaberg Aquatic Centre taking out major accolades at the 2026 Master Builders Wide Bay Burnett Housing and Construction Awards.
The Bundaberg Regional Council project was named the winner of the Sporting Facilities Award, recognising the quality and ambition of the facility and the work involved in bringing the major project to life.
The award was presented at the Master Builders ceremony at the Bundaberg Multiplex Sports and Convention Centre on Saturday, 22 August to contractors T.F Woollam & Son, recognising the construction team’s role in delivering the landmark facility.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the recognition reflected the vision and collaboration behind one of the most significant community infrastructure investments in local history.
“I know that everyone who steps inside this world-class facility understands its potential for our region,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“This is not just a pool – it’s a swimming and wellbeing hub that provides holistic experiences for our entire community that is not only visually striking, but also highly functional, accessible and built to meet the needs of our growing region for generations to come.
“Whether you’re returning to activity from an injury, taking your first independent paddle as a learner or training for the world stage, the Bundaberg Aquatic Centre is a shining example of thoughtful, sensible design constructed with community wellbeing in mind.”
The win came as Master Builders celebrated the achievements of the Wide Bay Burnett building and construction industry, with awards for a range of projects in residential, commercial developments, community infrastructure and individual excellence.
Master Builders Regional Manager – Wide Bay Burnett Ian Langer said the awards provided an opportunity to recognise the people and projects pushing the industry forward.
“Redefining excellence and overcoming challenges to deliver beyond expectation were hallmarks of the winners recognised at the 2026 Master Builders Wide Bay Burnett Housing & Construction Awards,” Mr Langer said.
“One of the best things about these awards is seeing the variety of achievements being recognised.
“From homes and commercial projects to individual award winners, each category highlights the skill, effort and commitment that goes into delivering great outcomes for clients and communities.”
The Bundaberg Aquatic Centre was among a strong group of local projects recognised at this year’s awards, which included:
- Murchie Constructions won the Education Facilities award for the Shalom College Coolock GLA’s in Norville, while **Bryant Building Contractors** took out the Social Housing Project award for McIlwraith Social Housing.
- WK Projects was recognised twice for Bundaberg projects, winning the Commercial/Industrial Building award for Total Tools Bundaberg and the Retail Facilities over $5 million award for the Coles Kensington Shopping Centre Expansion.
- IDC Construct won the Retail Facilities up to $5 million award for Bundaberg Harley Davidson and Yamaha, as well as the Excellence in Workplace Health & Safety award for its SafeSite System.
- McHugh Steel was named Commercial Trade Contractor of the Year for its work on Greens RV in Kensington.
- Emma Pressler-McHugh was highlighted for her leadership at McHugh Steel. She is renowned as a role model who empowers and mentors other women, which is what earned her the prestigious Women in Building Award.
