Swimmers returning to Gin Gin Swimming Pool this weekend will be greeted by a major new addition, with a state of the art retractable shade system now complete ahead of the facility’s reopening for the new swim season.
The project is a joint initiative between Bundaberg Regional Council and the Queensland Government, demonstrating a shared commitment to improving community recreation facilities and enhancing visitor comfort and safety.
The motorised shade sail can be extended or retracted at the push of a button, allowing staff to adjust shade coverage throughout the day to suit changing weather conditions and pool user needs.
The innovative system also features automatic wind sensors which retract the sail during high wind conditions to help protect the structure during storms and severe weather.
The project was completed in line with the pool’s reopening on 19 September.
Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn said Council was committed to investing in community infrastructure that encouraged healthy and active lifestyles.
“Our pools are important community assets and this project ensures Gin Gin Swimming Pool continues to be a great place for families, schools, swimming clubs and visitors to enjoy,” she said.
“With warmer weather arriving and pool season returning, this is a fantastic time for residents to get back in the water and make the most of everything our Region’s pools have to offer.”
Finance portfolio spokesperson and Division 3 Councillor Deb Keslake said the project delivered both practical benefits and long term value for the community.
“This is a smart investment that improves the visitor experience while incorporating technology that helps protect the infrastructure from severe weather,” she said.
“The team has done an excellent job delivering the project in time for the new swim season and I encourage residents to dive in and enjoy the facility.”
The Gin Gin Swimming Pool shade installation is a joint initiative of Bundaberg Regional Council and the Queensland Government.
