Rain impacts construction projects across region

Projects currently impacted by wet weather include the George/Targo Street intersection upgrade.

Wet weather across the region is affecting construction activities on several key Bundaberg Regional Council projects, with ongoing rainfall creating challenges for site conditions, work scheduling and delivery timeframes.

The George/Targo Street intersection upgrade is among the projects experiencing delays due to the ongoing rainfall.

Crews are currently working on Stage 1 of the project which involves the renewal of ageing box culverts over Saltwater Creek drain system as part of Council’s ongoing asset management program.

Recent heavy rain has impacted the site, including:

  • Causing damage to temporary water management and erosion control measures (ie. bund walls)
  • Ongoing rain and damage to bund walls has allowed tidal inundation has restricted site access limiting opportunities to safely reinstate these measures.
  • Created further delays to foundation improvement works, which cannot recommence until the site can be safely drained and prepared for construction.

Contractors had planned to recommence work this week; however continued rainfall has further impacted site conditions.

Other projects also impacted by the weather include the Saltwater Creek Pedestrian Bridge restoration works and the next stage of the Washpool Creek Naturalisation Project.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s forecast for the wider region indicates further showers and rain are possible, with the potential for additional wet weather to affect construction activities in the coming days to weeks.

Council is monitoring conditions across its sites and working with contractors to manage disruptions.

Bundaberg Regional Council acknowledges that construction activity, changed traffic conditions and uncertainty around delivery timeframes can cause frustration and thanks the community for its patience and understanding.
