Weekend rain prompts road closure reminder

Cedars Road, South Bingera. The Burnett River reached the bridge earlier this morning before water levels receded again by lunchtime.

Residents are being reminded to check the Bundaberg Regional Council Disaster Dashboard before heading out, with heavy rainfall causing flash flooding and closures on multiple local roads.

The region received a significant soaking over the weekend, with rainfall totals ranging from 60 mm to 170 mm since Friday.

The Bundaberg Aero station recorded 60.2 mm, Childers South recorded 119.4 mm and 174 mm fell at Isis.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the heavy rainfall has been caused by a slow-moving, moisture-laden and unstable air mass across eastern Queensland.

If it’s flooded, forget it

With wet conditions impacting travel across the region, residents are urged to take extra care on the roads and never drive through floodwater.

Remember:

  • If it’s flooded, forget it.
  • Follow all road closure signs and barriers.
  • Check conditions before leaving and allow extra travel time.
  • Be aware that flash flooding can occur quickly around creeks, low-lying roads and drainage areas.
  • Keep out of floodwater, which may hide hazards and can be deeper or faster-flowing than it appears.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a wet start to the week, with a high chance of storms today and scattered showers expected on Wednesday.

Conditions are expected to ease later in the week, with mostly dry weather forecast for Thursday and Friday.
