Visitors to Mon Repos this turtle season are being encouraged to discover another side of the beach’s history before their evening turtle encounter.
Mon Repos is known around the world for its nesting turtles but it also holds an important place in the story of Bundaberg aviation pioneer Bert Hinkler.
Long before his record-breaking flights captured international attention, a young Hinkler used the coastal dunes to test his hand-built gliders.
Today visitors can explore that connection at Hinkler Hall of Aviation where interactive exhibits and historic displays bring his remarkable story to life.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the attraction offered locals a great way to showcase another side of the Bundaberg Region to visiting friends and family.
“When people think of Mon Repos they naturally think of turtles but there is another fascinating story connected to the beach that many visitors are yet to discover,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“Hinkler Hall of Aviation celebrates the achievements of one of Bundaberg’s most famous sons and highlights the role Mon Repos played in his early experiments with flight.”
Mayor Blackburn said the museum was the perfect addition to a day out during turtle season.
“If you’re hosting visitors over the upcoming Christmas holidays, Hinkler Hall of Aviation is a fantastic place to start before heading to Mon Repos later in the day,” she said.
“Visitors can explore the museum, enjoy the beautiful Botanic Gardens and learn about Bundaberg’s aviation history before experiencing the magic of a turtle encounter that evening.
“It’s also a wonderful opportunity for locals to rediscover Hinkler Hall of Aviation and share one of the region’s unique stories with their guests.”
Located within the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens, Hinkler Hall of Aviation offers interactive experiences for all ages and is just a short drive from Mon Repos.
Bundaberg Region residents receive discounted entry and can enjoy free admission when accompanied by two paying adult or senior visitors.
Whether you’re welcoming interstate guests or planning a family day out, it’s the perfect way to experience two of the region’s most iconic stories in one day.
The Hinkler Hall of Aviation is open 9 am – 3pm, 7 days a week (closed Christmas Day, Good Friday and ANZAC Day).
