Don’t wait for disaster, get ready now

Weather doesn’t plan, but you can. Don’t wait for disaster to strike, join a range of local events for Get Ready Queensland Week 2025!

With storm season on the horizon, Bundaberg Regional Council is encouraging residents to get prepared early by taking simple steps and joining in a series of community events during Get Ready Queensland Week 2025.

Running from 6 to 12 October, Get Ready Queensland Week is a state-wide initiative led by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority under the message “Weather doesn’t plan, but you can.”

The campaign urges all Queenslanders to understand their risks, make a household emergency plan and prepare an emergency kit before severe weather strikes.

LDMG Chair Mayor Helen Blackburn said the region’s own experiences with floods, storms and cyclones highlighted the importance of being ready.

“Here in Bundaberg we know all too well how quickly weather conditions can turn,” Mayor Blackburn said.

“Disasters can strike at any time and being prepared makes all the difference.

“Get Ready Queensland Week is about empowering residents with the knowledge and tools they need to protect their families, homes and communities.”

Council will host a series of free events during the week to educate locals on how to prepare for severe weather.

“Together we can build a stronger, more resilient Bundaberg Region.”

Local tools that can help you Get Ready

In the Bundaberg Region, residents also have access to tools on the Council website including the Burnett River flood gauge mapping system which provides targeted property flood information so residents can understand what flood gauge heights mean for their property.

The Bundaberg Regional Council Disaster Dashboard is also a resource available to help residents prepare in the case of any natural disaster or emergency and to stay up-to-date with the latest from all relevant agencies.

The website provides links to news and contacts as well as a direct feed from the Bureau of Meteorology’s weather warnings.

Other vital information featured on the Disaster Dashboard includes:

• Road conditions

• Power outages

• Weather warnings

• River heights

The start of storm season is a good time to become familiar with the dashboard to ensure residents know what to do and where to go in any potential natural disaster.
