Time to dive in: aquatic centre opening announced

The wait is over – the Bundaberg Aquatic Centre is officially ready to open its doors and a date set for the community to try it out for free!

The highly anticipated, state-of-the-art facility will open from this Saturday and to celebrate, Bundaberg Regional Council is hosting a free entry community weekend to thank residents for their patience, enthusiasm and support throughout the build.

Mayor Helen Blackburn said the opening day marked a major milestone for the region.

“This facility has been a long time coming and we can’t wait to see families, clubs, schools and visitors all enjoying this space,” she said.

“From the many wonderful accessibility features and the ample space for exercising, training or just having fun, this centre is designed for everyone.”

Almost 600 lucky community members were able to take part in free, guided tours of the facility ahead of the opening, giving the community an exclusive sneak peek behind the scenes.

Many tour participants were thrilled by what they saw.

Pamela Croft was one such local who said she was excited to use the accessibility features and spend time with her family at the new facility.

“I think it is brilliant, I don’t live far from here so I have been watching it grow and grow,” Pamela said.

“Now that I am having a look, it is spectacular!

“I can’t wait to do water aerobics in a warm pool.

“To be disabled – to have all of that disability stuff is fantastic.

“I can’t wait to bring my grandchildren here – they are going to love it too – I think it is brilliant for everyone in the family.”

Fellow tour attendee Coral Walker shared in the excitement.

“I love that it caters for everybody,” Coral said.

“I really love the surroundings, the trees… I love it all.

“I will be coming here with my grandchildren.”

Opening details

To celebrate the opening, the Bundaberg Aquatic Centre will host a free community weekend, inviting everyone to explore the pools and experience the new facilities firsthand.

Date: Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 December

Time: 10 am to 4 pm

Cost: Free entry for all ages
