The colourful sights, festive sounds and authentic flavours of Lunar New Year will fill the Bundaberg Multiplex on Saturday 28 February as the region comes together to celebrate the Year of the Fire Horse.
Celebrated by millions around the world, Lunar New Year is a time for cultural traditions, family reunions and hopes for good fortune in the year ahead.
From 2 pm to 5 pm, the family‑friendly event will showcase an afternoon of traditional performances, hands‑on cultural activities and authentic Asian and Filipino street food.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said Lunar New Year was a cherished annual tradition that celebrated the cultural diversity of the Bundaberg Region.
“Lunar New Year is a time of renewal and connection and it’s wonderful to see our community continue to embrace traditions that are celebrated across Asia,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“The Year of the Fire Horse gallops in with vibrant and fiery energy, symbolising adventure, vitality and momentum – qualities that resonate with our region.”
Visitors will experience the energy of the PCYC Dragon and Lion dancers, the rhythm of Taiko drumming by Bundaberg State High School and vibrant Filipino cultural performances.
The program also offers visitors the chance to try their hand at Chinese calligraphy and enjoy an interactive art activity with local artist Larissa Dabrowski.
Mayor Blackburn encouraged residents to join the celebration as a way to connect with the region’s multicultural community and Bundaberg’s Sister City, Nanning.
“This annual event brings people together to share culture, food and stories and we’re pleased to welcome visiting students from our Sister City, Nanning, who will share traditions from their home.”
Bundaberg Regional Council Events portfolio spokesperson Cr Steve Cooper said the celebration created a welcoming space for all ages of the community to explore cultural traditions.
“It’s a chance for people to step into the world of Lunar New Year right here in Bundaberg,” Cr Cooper said.
“Whether you’re watching the dancers, listening to the drumming or getting involved in the workshops, there’s a real sense of cultural discovery.
“It’s wonderful to see families and friends come together and share in these experiences.”
