Damaged off-leash dog park closed to public

Bundaberg Regional Council made the decision after discovering the site’s fencing and footings were destroyed, leaving the area no longer secure for pets.

Dog owners who use the Bundaberg North Lions Dog Park are being encouraged to make alternative arrangements, with the area closed indefinitely due to significant flood damage.

Bundaberg Regional Council made the decision after discovering the site’s fencing and footings were destroyed, leaving the area no longer secure for pets.

Natural Resources and Environment portfolio spokesperson Cr Gary Kirk said the closure, while disappointing, was necessary to ensure community safety.

“We understand this is unfortunate news for local dog owners who regularly use the North Lions Park facility,” he said.

“However, the extent of the flood damage means the area cannot be used as a secure off-leash space.

“We encourage residents to make use of the other dedicated off-leash areas available across the region.”

Council currently provides a number of enclosed off-leash dog parks and off-leash areas.

These locations include:

  • Northern end of Fred Courtice Avenue, Bargara (Neilson Park)
  • Daph Geddes Park, East Bundaberg
  • Mary Kinross Park, southern Bargara
  • Apple Tree Creek Community Park
  • Designated sections of the Woodgate foreshore

Council reminds all residents that being a responsible pet owner means you are legally responsible for your pet’s behaviour at all times.

“Maintaining control of your dog and following simple rules helps ensure off-leash areas remain safe and enjoyable for everyone,” Cr Kirk said.

  1. Why not replace the Bundaberg North Lions Dog Park and put it at Federation Park. Make some added car parking at the end of Gavegan Street. Sure it floods there, but it wouldn’t have the force like the riverside Bundaberg North Lions Dog Park has.
The Bundaberg North LionsDog Park gets used often and you see many people taking there dogs there and have fun, it would be a shame not to have another one on the Northside.

  2. If you were to replace the Bundaberg North Lions Dog Park there, it would be better to put gates across each end to be opened at times of flood to allow the flow of water possibly causing less damage.

  3. If the Lions Park dog park has t be closed, I fully agree that an excellent place to relocate would be Federation Park – grossly underused at present. We have exercised our Kelpie/Jack Russell cros at Lions Park every morning and every afternoon for the past 3 years without missing a session. There has been a thriving and growing community joining us. It has been a great social time for both dogs and neighbours. The dogs play together well and have better lives than those poor creatures shut up in their yards day on boring day. Please find a solution in the area. Those other options don’t work: we’ve tried them…

  4. Please may we have a reply from Council. What are your views on relocating to Federation park, Cr Kirk?
