Grant supports upkeep of croquet club

The club has secured $4,525 through the Community Grants Program, with the funding earmarked for a replacement engine for its trusty Toro mower.

The Bundaberg Croquet Club is set to keep its greens in top-notch condition thanks to a welcome boost from a Bundaberg Regional Council grant.

The club has secured $4,525 through the Community Grants Program, with the funding earmarked for a replacement engine for its trusty Toro mower.

President Russell Davis said the funding would make a meaningful difference to the club’s upkeep.

“As you can appreciate, our lawns are of paramount importance and having a good mower is essential,” he said.

“Our grounds are voluntarily cared for by enthusiastic members of the club.”

Russell said the Bundaberg Regional Council’s support was invaluable in helping the club manage larger costs so the group could continue to provide quality facilities.

“Funding programs like this are important, because while we can look after the day to day running of the club major expenses become very difficult,” he said.

History of local club

The Bundaberg Croquet Club was formed in 1900, with members celebrating its 125-year anniversary recently.

Russell said the milestone highlighted the club’s long-standing role in the community and its continued commitment to the sport.

“It is a small club with very enthusiastic members who all love the game of croquet and the fellowship and friendliness of the club,” he said.

“Croquet is a wonderful and very strategic game, so it is excellent for both physical and mental exercise.

“It is a game which is enjoyed by all ages and can also be played by people with disabilities.

“We are proud to be able host many groups for social activities and also have groups who are funded by NDIS with the help of their carers.

“We also host competitions throughout the year and have players coming from Brisbane, Toowoomba and other clubs from the Wide Bay region.”

Russell said anyone interested in trying croquet can register at comeandtrycroquet.com

“We will be in contact promptly and we offer free coaching and mallets to start them off,” he said.
