A recent invitation to attend Taipei’s Smart City Summit and Expo 2026 has given Bundaberg Regional Council fresh insight into how cities around the world are using innovation to tackle real challenges and plan for the future.
Attending as a VIP guest of the Taipei Computer Association, Deputy Mayor Cr Steve Cooper joined more than 350 mayors and deputy mayors from around the world to explore practical solutions to issues relating to flood management, waste, service delivery and the challenges of ageing communities.
He said the trip was focused on bringing back ideas that could make a difference locally.
“On this trip I experienced how technology can improve the way cities manage flooding,” he said.
“With Bundaberg’s flood history, it was incredibly valuable to see how other countries are tackling the same challenges in innovative ways.
“We can take these learnings and apply them to strengthen our own planning and resilience.”
Cr Cooper said the summit also highlighted new approaches to recycling and waste management, as well as forward-thinking solutions to support ageing populations and improve future models of senior care.
“Building these relationships opens the door to future partnerships that can benefit our region,” he said.
Upon his return, Cr Cooper presented his findings to Council and said the visit, along with others like it, helped shape the region’s future.
“This is about making sure Bundaberg continues to grow in a smart and sustainable way,” he said.
“The insights gained will support better planning, stronger infrastructure and improved services for our community.”
Attendance at the Smart City Summit and Expo, including travel expenses, received funding support from the Taipei Computer Association, with remaining costs covered by Bundaberg Regional Council.
Cr Cooper expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and thanked the association for its generous support in bringing local government leaders from around the world together.
