Her Excellency the Governor of Queensland hosted a community luncheon in Bundaberg on Sunday to honour community efforts in the region’s flood response and recovery.

In March 2026 the Burnett River and other local waterways experienced major flooding.

The Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) stood up in response, with representatives from emergency services, Bundaberg Regional Council and service agencies, to support the community through the initial response and then its recovery.

Her Excellency the Governor of Queensland The Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM and Professor Graeme Nimmo RFD hosted the event at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery.

Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn said flood events caused emotional and physical devastation but time after time they also brought out the best in the Bundaberg Region community.

“We are such a strong, resilient and proud community and I can never think of disaster events like the March flooding we experienced without reflecting on the wonderful people we have to get us through in times of need,” Mayor Blackburn said.

“The LDMG did a commendable job in guiding our community through this event and ensuring residents had the teams on the ground and the support and information they needed to stay safe.

“We’re still recovering from this event but our community banded together to get homes cleaned and businesses back up and running as fast as possible.

“This luncheon was a well-deserved recognition of these efforts.”

Attendees at the community luncheon were presented with the Governor’s medallion.
