Woodgate Men’s Shed put the wheels in motion to upgrade their exercise equipment after successfully applying for a Community Services Grant through Bundaberg Regional Council.

The group was awarded $700 through the Community Services Program and used the grant funding to purchase a new spin bike for members to access when using their gymnasium area.

Woodgate Men’s Shed Grants Officer Rob Purves said they were grateful for the continued support from Council through community grants.

“We have a facility area in our shed for a gymnasium and it was decided that we purchase a spin bike instead of the old rusty exercise bike we had – an upgrade which, with the spin bike, made it easier for members to use with their age and their old injuries,” Rob said.

“Council was involved through the Smarty Grants [application] process and community grants [fund] which has been great for the shed, not only for this spin bike but for some previous grants they’ve been able to help us with.”

Rob said their weightlifting options didn’t suit everyone and so the upgraded spin bike gave members a new and safe way to exercise.

“It’s allowed the members to become more engaged in our gymnasium and also our Let’s Get Moving program which we identified a while ago,” he said.

“With the demographic age of our members, the bones get creakier and the muscles don’t move as much, we need to keep that going to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“Council grants are fantastic, they’ve helped us so much.

“It just enables places like Men’s Sheds and even sporting facilities to grow and keep providing a service for the community.

“A big thank you to Bundaberg Regional Council for all the support they give us.”

Community Services program

Bundaberg Regional Council’s Community Services Program aims to assist local community groups and organisations who make positive contributions to quality of life in the region.

Organisations can submit one application per funding round in three categories – community development grant, community events grant and sport and recreation – and grants are offered four times per financial year.
