The annual Bundaberg Central Rotary Club and Bundaberg Library Book Sale is back again this year with stories lining the shelves at the Bundaberg Recreational Precinct.
The two organisations committed to promoting literacy are once again joining forces for this popular fundraiser event.
The event will run from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 July at the Bundaberg Recreational Precinct with books on sale for as little as 50c as well as jigsaws, CDs, DVDs and magazines.
Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn said the Bundaberg Library played a proud role in the popular community event.
“The Bundaberg Library has once again processed public donations as well as its own, having recently refreshed the adult fiction, non-fiction and picture book collections,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“This is an exciting opportunity to own one of the books you’ve maybe enjoyed checking out on your library card before, including authors that top our loan lists like James Patterson and Danielle Steele.
“This book sale is a great way for the community to get together, give back and invest in literacy across our region.”
She said the annual event was made possible thanks to the support of Central Rotary Club and its dedicated group of volunteers.
Bundaberg Central Rotary Club’s book sale coordinator Ross Peddlesden said the organisation enjoyed working alongside the library to facilitate the event.
“Library staff pack and price the books they are sending to the sale, which is a great saving of our volunteer’s effort, and we work closely with them not only during the sale but through all of the year,” Ross said.
“We also love the fact that some of the proceeds of the sale go to the literacy projects of the library.
“The book sale has a couple of aims – of course it is an important fundraiser for the club’s work in the Bundaberg community, around Australia and internationally, but equally importantly it is a literacy project, especially when it comes to children.
“Literacy is one of Rotary’s areas of focus, and we love to support that.”
Ross said there was a lot of new stock on offer this year thanks to generous donations form the community.
“For the children, there will be plenty to choose from (we keep the prices of children’s books to 50 cents and a dollar because we want as many books in Bundaberg children’s homes as possible), and also a new feature – a children’s reading corner where volunteers will read to the little children,” he said.
“There will be all the usual extras – good food, a coffee van and great fellowship.
“Over recent years we have been fortunate to have received more and more donations of books which we can add to the sale.
“We’re happy to receive any donation that people would like to make up till the sale itself, and we can arrange pick up of course.
“Other than that – just come along to the sale and pick up a bargain!”
