Local Bundaberg artist Larissa Dabrowski will lead an interactive community art activity at the Bundaberg CBD Pavilion on Thursday 6 August to encourage conversation about homelessness, belonging and community safety.
Doorways and Origami House‑Making invites the community to take part in a simple creative project to support Homelessness Week which is held nationally from 3 – 9 August.
The activity aims to raise awareness and support people who may be experiencing housing stress or crisis.
The program is presented by Bundaberg Regional Council as part of its Safe Spaces, Thriving Places initiative to revitalise the Bundaberg CBD.
Mayor Helen Blackburn said the activation supported Council’s work to build a more vibrant, welcoming and safer CBD through community‑led initiatives.
“We want more positive activity in the city centre because when we gather, participate and feel ownership of a space, it strengthens safety and community confidence,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“This activation not only helps us talk openly about homelessness but it shows how our artists, services and residents can work together to support one another.”
Mayor Blackburn said partnerships were key to building a safer and more connected city centre.
“Safe Spaces Thriving Places is about our shared responsibility to make the CBD safer and more welcoming,” she said.
“Homelessness Week highlights how we can all contribute to a supportive community and activations like this help people connect with services, understand the support available and take part in a more caring community.”
The activation will feature a symbolic door that represents the need for a safe place to call home.
Community members will be encouraged to fold origami houses and place them on the door or take them home if they prefer.
Each house adds to a growing display that shows collective commitment to fair and equal access to housing.
Larissa Dabrowski will guide participants through the origami‑making process.
Social service providers will be onsite throughout the day offering information, referral pathways and support for individuals and families in crisis.
Origami packs with instructions and craft paper will be available for schools, services and community groups.
Members of the public can drop in at any time to make an origami house, speak with Larissa, connect with services or explore the installation.
